Last Thursday, May 22, the newly elected GRMC taxing district hospital board held its first meeting.
Among several items on the agenda, the board was tasked with establishing its hierarchy. Larry Kovar was named chairman, Dr. Donald Behr was named vice chairman and Wyatt Pettus was named treasurer.
During the public comment section of the meeting, attendant Kent Pettus, one of the 16 nominees on the ballot for the taxing district election, brought up his concerns about transparency within the new GRMC board, echoing concerns that many within the hospital district have had regarding all facets of running GRMC.
Specifically, Pettus wanted to know why the public comment section within the board’s agenda was positioned at the opening of each meeting.
“That’s one of the things that worries me, is lack of communication with the board,” Pettus said at the meeting. “You just say that you can’t talk to the board about what’s going on during the meeting.”
Pettus explained to Kovar that he felt it was troublesome for citizens with concerns and comments, for one reason, because once the public comment section is closed, there can be no more comment from citizens in attendance.
