The Texas Forts Trail announces a partnership with the Wichita Falls Streams and Valleys for a Columbus Day weekend event entitled, “The Texas Forts Tour, a ride through history.”
The scheduled event is a family-friendly, three-day bicycle ride slated for Columbus Day weekend beginning and ending in Jacksboro. Registration and a spaghetti supper is slated for Friday, Oct. 9, at Fort Richardson. During the course of the ride, participants will have the opportunity to tour three historic frontier forts — Fort Richardson, Fort Belknap and Fort Griffin. Host communities along the route include Jacksboro, Graham, Throckmorton, Albany, Breckenridge, Palo Pinto and Mineral Wells. The bike route is being developed and organizers are working with volunteers in each of the host communities.
The Forts Tour has been designed to keep families together for portions of the route each day. Friends and family can start out on the 90-mile route, stay on it all the way or take turnarounds that keep their distances closer than 25 to 50 miles, over the three-day event.
The Texas Forts Tour will begin each day at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, with a bike ride that begins at Fort Richardson to Graham and Fort Belknap. They will end the day at Throckmorton.
Again, the bikers will leave at 8 a.m. and head for Fort Griffin, north of Albany. The bikers will roll into Breckenridge on Sunday, Oct. 11, where they will spend the night. At 8 a.m. Monday, the bikers will depart Breckenridge and head for Palo Pinto, Mineral Wells, Graford and then Jacksboro.
The Texas Forts Trail Region encompasses 29 counties in West Central Texas and is a non-profit organization with offices in Abilene.
