Gatlin to compete in Miss Wayland Pageant
 (Posted 11/3/2009 02:53 pm)
The number 13 may be an unlucky omen for some folks, but for Wayland Baptist University, it’s the perfect number to put on the Miss Wayland Baptist Pageant.
Slated at 7 p.m. Nov. 7, the pageant includes an opening number, evening gown and talent competitions, with a private interview with the judges held earlier in the day.
Themed “The Time of My Life,” the pageant will feature Danny Andrews, director of alumni development, as emcee and a final appearance by Miss Wayland Baptist 2009 Kristin Blakely.
The winner serves as an ambassador for the university for the following year and receives a scholarship and prize package from area businesses.
This year, 13 coeds are competing for the title, already heavily in the throes of late-night rehearsals that ensure a seamless, enjoyable pageant for both the contestants and audience members.
The public is invited to attend the event in Harral Auditorium as well, with admission at $5 for the public and $3 for WBU employees or students with an ID.
Once all girls have competed in evening gown and talent competitions, the judges will narrow the field to five finalists and those will be posed a final question in order to determine the winner and runners-up. Blakely will crown Miss Wayland 2010 after her final walk.
Included in the competition is Lesley Gatlin, sophomore theater major and a Graham High School graduate.
The daughter of Gary and Donna Gatlin of Graham, Lesley is in Wayland Singers and Alpha Psi Omega and was her freshman class president. She is on the yearbook staff and hopes to do mission work using Christian theater as outreach and in churches.
Her talent will be a monologue and song, and she is sponsored by Alpha Psi Omega.
