Hunters warned about possible deer poisoning in Eastland County
 (Posted 11/6/2009 02:42 pm)
The Agriculture Extension Office in Austin has reported a poisoning that occurred in Eastland County two weeks ago.
A rancher south of Carbon tried to kill wild hogs by mixing deer corn with a pesticide called Temik. Temik contains Aldicarb (cholinesterase inhibitor) which is very neurotoxic. The rancher spread a very large amount of mixed corn on his 2,000-acre peanut crop to kill wild hogs. However, it had been noted that deer were feeding on the same ranch.
With the opening of deer season this weekend, authorities asked hunters not to eat venison meat harvested in south Eastland County until further notice. Any deer appearing sick or stumbling should be avoided. Though ingested levels would have to be high in a deer, duck, hog, etc. to seriously affect humans, authorities note it is very toxic and possibly fatal.
State and federal investigations are in progress. Further questions and concerns can be directed to Michael Hare with the Austin Agriculture Extension Office at (512) 475-3305.
