Clay's Corner -- Six years of challenge futility finally comes to an end
by Clay Stewart

I told you so. I told you so. I told you so.
That’s all the bragging I’m going to do.
OK, I’m full of it.
In a hard, fought battle, my editor, David Rupkalvis, and I defeated the teams of Jim Reeves and Richard Ferguson of the Graham Police Department and and Tim Bay and Bryan Walls of the Young County Sheriff’s Office in the first annual Po-Po Mini Golf Challenge at the Secret Garden Miniature Golf Course on Tuesday. We have a trophy to prove it and everything. I still have the scorecard, so come by and I’ll show it off.
Before I get too much into bragging, I have to thank several people for making this happen: David and Pam Scott opened the course and David served as the referee for the match. They were amazing, and we can’t thank them enough. Please go and play the Secret Garden Miniature Golf Course this weekend. It’s a blast.
Thanks also to Reeves, Ferguson, Bay and Walls. They embraced this with the humor with which it was intended, and we all had a great time.
David and I actually didn’t think we would win, but the sheriff’s office gave us a little added inspiration. Walls and Bay showed up wearing shirts calling us names. It was something about slinging slimeballs, but I won’t go into the whole thing. Suffice to say we were a little more determined when we started.
The recent rains left the course in amazing condition. It was green all the way around, and the greens were mowed perfectly. It is certainly a very well manicured course.
The Po-Po started the match off hot as Ferguson aced hole No. 1. That gave them a one-shot lead heading to the second. Walls and Bay tied it on the second when Walls aced it. Reeves and Ferguson had trouble on the second and made four, while David and I made a two to move into second place.
David and I set the goal of being consistent and letting the other teams make mistakes. They did and at the end of the front nine, we were ahead by one shot. I have to admit that it was more because of David than me. He aced the ninth hole, a bender around the corner. I made a couple of key putts for twos on several holes, but David was the “A” player.
We fell a stroke behind on the 10th, and were two behind after the 13 as Bay aced a hole. But we tied it on the next one as David double-banked in a hole in one and Bay and Walls made a three. On the 15th, I rolled in my first ace to give us the lead and it was all downhill.
In the end, David and I finished with an even par 36, while Bay and Walls shot 38 and Reeves and Ferguson had to take some risks down the stretch to get back in it and finished with 45.
So, in truth, we are superior to the law enforcement officers in Young County ... at least in mini golf.
It was quite humorous to see the local Po-Po all show up with their own putters and golf balls. Bay and Walls had theirs in a rifle case. David and I selected our putters and golf balls from the collection at the Secret Garden Miniature Golf Course (go there this weekend) and played with rubber head putters. We still won.
They may be able to intimidate in a traffic stop, but they can’t intimidate that press.
By the way, Walls told us that Po-Po is not an offensive term to law enforcement, but the word “press” is.
I’ll bet it’s really offensive now that they’ve been beaten by us. Thanks again to everyone involved and to all that came out to watch. It was a blast and we’ll do it again next year. Please go and play the Secret Garden Miniature Golf Course. It’s great family entertainment.
See you at the games!
