Minus Commissioner Stacey Rogers, the Young County Commission elected in a 3 - 1 vote this morning to demolish the old county jail on the Graham Square.

This decision came amid a nearly seven year discussion about what should be done with the building since it became dormant, and a spirited discussion once again enlivened this Monday's County Commissioner's meeting regarding growing concerns about a lack of space in the County Courthouse, and whether or not the old county jail could serve as a viable option for a makeshift storage space.

Toward the end of the meeting, Commissioner Jimmy Wiley brought up the issue of tearing down the old county jail entirely. Commissioner Mike Sipes agreed with Wiley, at which point both County Judge John Bullock and County Attorney Dayne Miller expressed their strong disagreement to the proposal.

The court expects the demolition to be carried out by the end of 2013. More details will be forthcoming as they emerge. Look for a more detailed report in this Wednesday's edition of the Graham Leader.
