The Graham tennis team hadn't played anyone other than themselves for a month and it showed against Burkburnett.

The Steers missed shots and serves and lacked the intensity that they needed for a game situation. Still, coach Matt Birdwell liked what he saw Thursday night.

“We were competitive in a lot of games,” coach Matt Birdwell said. “A lot of games went right there to the end. But we just weren't getting those key points.”

The Bulldogs had already played three matches prior to Graham so they were past the first-match jitters. Burkburnett was able to push past the Steers 16-3.

Graham came out strong taking two out of three boys doubles matches. Alex Smith and Marcus Monfort won 8-4 as did Wesley Dake and Jordan Gardner.

Birdwell liked the doubles performance since that had been a weak spot last season. He emphasized doubles during practice which resulted in the fast start.
