One woman’s impact has started a bright future for dozens of students and has helped beautify Graham.
The Hawkins family is well known, specifically Helen Hawkins, who teaches piano to students in Young County. Hawkins was the organist at Graham’s First United Methodist Church. After 40 years of service, Hawkins retired. In honor of Hawkins, one of her former piano students, Amy (Price) Cole, and FUMC member Glyn Gilliam, along with other FUMC members, started the Helen F. Hawkins Scholarship in 2000.
Funds for the scholarship are raised by monetary donations and by donations of old electronics. Hawkins’ sons, Lonny and Tony, have been collecting old, used and broken electronics and have been recycling and reselling them for scrap for six years. Tony and Lonny take apart all of the devices and sell the parts accordingly. They take the money they make and put it right back into the scholarship fund.
