The annual Graham Junior Tennis Camp had a new wrinkle this year.
Head coach Matt Birdwell held a session for athletes entering sixth through ninth grade. The session had four campers; a smaller turnout than he anticipated.
“This is the first year we had it, so as news spreads I expect it to get bigger and bigger,” he said.
Jolie Sheapippins, who is entering her second year as a tennis player, said the camp helped prepare her for the upcoming junior high season.
“It was really fun,” Sheapippins said. “I got to learn a lot more about my serves and I'm getting better.”
Before the junior high kids took the court, 16 kids entering first through fifth grade spent the mornings learning to hit. The campers did backhand and forehand hitting in addition to volleying, where the ball is hit before it touches the ground.
