The City of Graham named Sharon Kirkwood chief accountant serving under Financial Director David Maddy. The new position uses a portion of salary previously budgeted to the currently inactive Public Works Administrator role. David Casteel held that post but was promoted to city manager when Larry Fields retired in April, leaving the post vacant. At that time it was determined the accountant position would be created in lieu of filling the Public Works Administrator position.
“She is going to be working to help fill in some gaps and catch us up to speed because this accounting function has grown and has a lot more responsibilities with it, and I think over the next 18 to 24 months (Kirkwood) will be working to become the new finance director,” Maddy said at the July 16 Graham City Council meeting where Kirkwood’s employment was announced.
Kirkwood joins the city staff after serving for more than two years as the vice president of the now-closed Graham Citibank, a position that brought her from the Metroplex to Graham, and said she moved from the private sector to municipal service as a way to stay in Graham.
“My main reason (for taking the job) was for the benefits, as well as I don’t want to go back to the Metroplex,” Kirkwood said. “I like the small town life.”
