DPS, TxDOT share safety message for local, state drivers

The Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Department of Transportation joined together to share a message this week in Graham of maintaining driver safety.

DPS Sergeant Juan Gutierrez and TxDOT Traffic Safety Specialist Tish Beaver met Tuesday, April 2 with the Rotary Club of Graham to present statistics regarding the major issues their departments face on roadways throughout the state.

“We actually have not seen a deathless day in Texas since Nov. 7, 2000. So it’s almost 24 years now that we’ve not had a death in a day on Texas roads,” Gutierrez said.

City considers prohibiting camping at Kindley Park

Following reported concerns by the city code enforcement officer, a draft ordinance amendment will be established to prohibit camping of any type at Kindley Park. The amendment will be discussed by the Graham City Council and will require three readings before adoption.

City Manager Eric Garretty and city staff will be drafting an ordinance amendment to prohibit camping for presentation at a future council meeting. During the council meeting Thursday, March 28, the city manager said the code enforcement officer has dealt with repeated concerns at the park.

Public hearing Monday on food trucks downtown

The city of Graham is holding a public hearing Monday to receive community input on a draft policy allowing food trucks on the downtown square.

A draft policy was approved by the Graham City Council during their meeting Thursday, Feb. 29. Under the draft policy, three food truck spaces would be allotted on a first-come, first-serve basis on the southern half of the square.

The vendors must register with the Graham code enforcement officer to be eligible for a space. If the number of entries exceeded the three on the policy, a random selection would be made.

Crawfish and Cannons event taking over Fort Belknap next weekend

The sounds of cannon fire, the smell of crawfish and the rush of runners will be part of the lineup for the Crawfish and Cannons event next weekend at Fort Belknap.

The fort will host Crawfish and Cannons, the Goodnight-Loving Run, the Texas Fort Trail Wine Festival and more Saturday, April 13, with tickets available online at crawfishandcannons.com.

Unearthing history: Researchers discover markers, items at local African American cemetery

After work began at the beginning of March to unearth the history of the Oak Grove Colored-William P. Johnston Memorial Cemetery, progress and discoveries were made last weekend by a professor and her students from Texas Tech University.

Dr. Tamra L. Walter, historical archaeologist and associate professor of archeology, along with graduate students worked Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 to scrape graves at the cemetery, which involves taking off a layer of topsoil to inspect the ground for potential graveshafts.

County to provide emergency medical kits to first responders

Law enforcement agencies in Young County will be receiving Stop the Bleed kits for officers to have in their vehicles when responding to emergencies.

Jarod Cook, of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, shared a plan Monday, March 25 to distribute these kits primarily to law enforcement officers throughout the county. The Young County Commissioners Court unanimously approved the motion to purchase the kits.

Grand jury no-bills county inmate death case

A Young County grand jury this month no-billed the case of an inmate death that occurred in March 2023 at the Young County Jail. The determination was made following the completion of an investigation from the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers.

Brandon Taylor, 31, of Mineral Wells, was found unresponsive in an administrative segregation cell March 21, 2023.

Cinco de Mayo event heading downtown

Local businesses are coming together to bring the inaugural Festival de Cinco de Graham to the downtown square. With food, entertainment, children’s activities and more, the event is looking to liven up the square.

The festival will be held on Fourth Street and Oak Street from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4. Owner of Neri’s on the Square, Neri Gonzalez, who is part of the Cinco de Mayo committee coordinating the event, said it continues to grow.

Local area leaders speak at State of the Community luncheon

The Graham Chamber of Commerce hosted its first State of the Community luncheon last week and gathered representatives from local taxing entities to provide updates regarding current and upcoming projects, accomplishments and goals.

The event was hosted Tuesday, March 19 as one of the chamber’s quarterly luncheons at North Central Texas College. Speakers were Mayor Alex Heartfield, City Manager Eric Garretty, Graham Regional Medical Center CEO Shane Kernell, Graham ISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse and NCTC Director Dr. Magen Bunyard.
