GISD continues modified four-day calendar for 2024-2025 school year

The 2024-2025 Graham ISD school calendar will remain as a modified four-day calendar after approval from the GISD Board of Trustees this week.

It was reported to the board in November 2023 that the Graham ISD Calendar Committee had begun the planning process for establishing a calendar for the 2024-2025 school year.

Early voting Tuesday in primary election

Early voting in the March primaries begins Tuesday, with local, state and national seats on the ballot.

The primary election will be Tuesday, March 5, with early voting Tuesday, Feb. 20, through Friday, March 1. The deadline to register to vote in the primaries was Monday, Feb. 5. The last day to apply for a ballot by mail will be Friday, Feb. 23.

Per state law, those who vote with one political party in the primary election must vote in the same political party for the runoff election.

GRT kicks off new season with melodrama

Throwing popcorn, booing the bad guy and cheering for the hero has become an annual event for audiences at Graham Regional Theatre’s melodrama. This week, the nonprofit theater group opens its season with its melodrama at The Perry theater in Graham.

Four performances of “A Golden Fleecing or the Undermining of Sarah Sweetflower’s Sarsaparilla Saloon and Bridal Shoppe,” will be put on by GRT starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16. Two performances will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 and the final show will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18.

County to consider new Hwy. 67 RV park

The Young County Commissioners Court received plans this week for a new RV park in Graham, but questions remain regarding the establishment of this new location.

Commissioner Scott Shook of Precinct 2 presented the plans during the county meeting Monday, Feb. 12 for the other commissioners and county judge to consider. The RV park would be located near where Hamm and Son Well Service used to be, at 640 Hwy 67.

Graham, Young County see drop in sales in December

The city of Graham and Young County saw one of largest drops in recent years for sales tax allocations for sales in December 2023 by businesses that report sales taxes monthly, by quarterly filers and by businesses which report annually.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Wednesday, Feb. 7, that the state will be sending cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $1.3 billion in local sales tax allocations this month, 1.6% more than in February 2023.

Rotary Four-Way Test open to high school students

Rotary Club of Graham is hosting its annual Four-Way Test Speech Contest for all high school students next month as an opportunity to develop public speaking skills and compete for a cash prize.

The contest will be held at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at Graham High School, with the winner of the best five-minute speech receiving $350 and the chance to compete at the regional and district level for additional prizes.

Wakefield receives two life sentences for child sexual assault

After more than four days of witness testimony and evidence, a jury handed down two life sentences to a man convicted of sexual assault of a child.

Seth Wakefield, 34, of Olney, was found guilty Friday on two counts after five hours of jury deliberation, with the punishment being set after less than 10 minutes.

Wakefield was indicted in July 2022 by a Young County Grand Jury on two separate offenses of sexual assault of a child younger than 17-years-old.

GISD to host Special Olympics basketball competition

Graham High School is set to play host to the annual Area 9 Basketball Competition of the Special Olympics of Texas next month.

Each year that Graham ISD has hosted the competition since COVID, the event has grown in size and popularity. Although it’s just a one-day event, individuals with special needs come from all around Area 9, which encompasses Wichita County, Young County and others up to Decatur.

GISD launches 2024 bond website

Graham ISD recently made resources available online for the public regarding the two bond propositions which will be included on the May ballot.

The district website with information related to the GISD 2024 bond is available at grahamisd.com/56781_1. The website includes information on Proposition A and Proposition B, voting information and the tax impact on residents within the district for both bond options combined.

Young County applying for mobile mental health unit grant

Young County recently passed a resolution to apply for a grant regarding a mobile mental health team to assist with mental health in the community and intervention in mental health crises.

In a specially called meeting Friday, Feb. 2 of the Young County Commissioners Court, Judge Win Graham and the county commissioners voted unanimously to apply for Senate Bill 26 which would provide a two-year program which would cost $1.35 million to provide the Critical Access Rapid Response Evaluation (CARRE) unit for Young County.
