Douglas S. Carter of Kilgore passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Hickory Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Ralph Rudy officiating. The family will receive friends at Cross Roads United Methodist Church following the service.
He was born in July 1, 1923, in Graham to Bess Christopher Carter and W.H. “Ed” Carter. After graduating from Graham High School, Doug attended both TCU and Baylor universities, playing football at both schools. He joined the U.S. Navy in World War II and served in the Pacific Theatre. It was at Baylor, after the war, that he met and married Clara, and they celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Doug retired from Sun Oil Company in 1980 and his hobbies included reading his Bible, playing golf and working on his acreage located in the Cross Roads community.
He is survived by his wife Clara, his son Barry and wife Sue and two grandchildren Douglas and Caroline.
