Mary Belle Cearley, 92, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, in Muskogee, Okla. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in Morrison Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Mary was born July 9, 1921, in South Bend to the late Little Joe and Victoria Elizabeth Grisham. She married Allen Douglas “Pip” Cearley, March 9, 1940 in Decatur. He preceded in death Dec. 22, 1978. Mary was a longtime resident of Young County and a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was a hard worker, tending to her own cattle until the age of 80, and often remarked that even the little birds have to scratch around to find something to eat. Her creative mind made her a great storyteller, and for years she enchanted her grandchildren with tales of riding flying horses to visit her sister in California.
She was skilled in handcrafts like crochet and cross-stitch and, after seeing something she admired in a store display, would usually say, “Well, we ought to be able to make something like that.”
She was a woman of faith with a heart for service to others.
Mary was preceded in death by grandson, James Everett Douglas Cearley in 1978. Also preceding her in death were brothers Price Grisham, Little Bert Grisham and Custer Ray Grisham; and sisters, Claire Alice Walker, Katie Mae Cearley, Mable Cearley, Annie Feldt and Lillie Belle Carter.
Survivors include her son, Douglas Cearley and wife Linda Cearley of Gore, Okla.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Sunny Cearley and husband Derick Deweber of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Spencer Cearley and wife Casie McKamie Cearley of Houston.
At the time of her passing, she had 24 living nieces and nephews.
The family will be available at Morrison Funeral Home on the day of the service at 10 a.m. to greet friends. Morrison Funeral Home is at 700 Oak Street, Graham, Texas, 76450 and their phone number is (940) 549-2121.
