Graham tennis took a tough 17-2 loss Tuesday afternoon in Vernon. Despite the one-sided final, boys ace Marcus Montfort had an extremely successful day, winning both of his events. Montfort teamed with Sabryna Adrianson to win the mixed doubles event before winning his individual contest against Vernon’s ace. In the individual event, Montfort dropped the first set but bounced back to take the second and the tie-breaker. “I was talking to him on the court and he talked about getting his shot up,” Graham coach Matt Birdwell said. “He slowed everything down and focused on mechanics and got his shots to fall. He’s a senior. He’s been there. He’s learned a lot from experience.” For Montfort, learning on the fly is key. That’s why the senior star carries a notebook in his tennis bag, keeping track of lessons he’s learned along the way. “He’s a student of the game,” Birdwell said. “He can usually figure out what he’s not doing correct and fix it.” For the rest of this story, pick up a copy of Saturday's Graham Leader, or subscribe to our online edition.
