During the course of a playoff run, it’s not uncommon for a team to run into an opponent they have defeated or lost to in years past. Friday night in the area round of the playoffs, the Graham Steers will meet one of those familiar faces in the Loboes, when these two teams battle it out for a spot in the regional quarterfinals. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. from Jones AT&T Stadium on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The winner of this contest will meet either Iowa Park or Seminole in the third round of the playoffs. Graham and Monahans last met in 2009 in the area round of the playoffs, played in the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater. Graham was able to pull out a 44-28 victory that night, and the Steers eventually ended up as the state runner-up. Times have changed since then. Kenny Davidson is now the head coach of the Steers, whereas in 2009 he was the defensive coordinator. There’s a sense of history in the air surrounding this contest. A victory would make the sixth-year head coach the winningest coach in Graham football history, breaking a tie with David Borquin at 64 wins apiece. The experience of having dealt with Monahans in the playoffs does give Davidson an idea of what to expect when the Loboes take the field Friday night. “We know they are a Wing-T type of team,” Davidson said. “They are kind of like Vernon, but they (Monahans) run more variations of the offense than they (Vernon) do. It’s a unique offense in this day and age. For the rest of this story, subscribe to our print or online edition.
