Graham senior safety Mikey Freeze will sit out the 2014 football season with a shoulder injury and will not return to Graham.
Head coach Kenny Davidson confirmed Freeze's injury Wednesday morning.
“It's one of those injuries that needs to be taken care of,” Davidson said. “So that's what he's doing.”
Freeze suffered the injury during two-a-day practices in what Davidson called a “routine drill.”
Jamie Land, Freeze's mother, said Freeze wanted to play through the injuriy but two doctors-- one from Wichita Falls and one from Fort Worth-- told him he needed surgery.
Freeze will undergo surgery Thursday followed by five months of rehab.
The decision to attend Weatherford High School realted to acadmics. Weatherford offers the classes Freeze needs to graduate in December, Land said.
Freeze commited to Texas Christian University on May 4. He plans enroll at TCU in January and start practicing with the football team in he spring.
Leaving Graham was a hard decision for Freeze since he wanted to fnish his high school career in his hometown, Land said.
A two-year starter for the Steers, Freeze had 92 tackles and earned 3A all-state honorable mention honors in 2013. Freeze also got all-state honors in baseball and qualified for the state track meet.
Calls to Freeze were unreturned.
Graham opens the 2014 season Friday against Vernon.
