The Monitor in McAllen ( http://bit.ly/1ilFZPh) reports 53-year-old Jose "Joe" Padilla pleaded not guilty Friday during a hearing. A federal judge set bond at $100,000—with a $5,000 cash deposit—and ordered home detention.
Until recently, Padilla supervised the Special Services Bureau, reporting directly to Sheriff Lupe Trevino. On Thursday, Trevino fired Padilla, ending his 24-year career with the office.
Padilla was arrested Tuesday after an indictment linked him to a Weslaco-based drug trafficking organization.
If Padilla pays the $5,000 cash deposit and submits the required paperwork, he'll probably leave federal custody Monday.
Attorney Joe Cisneros says Padilla had hoped Trevino would keep him employed until trial, perhaps on unpaid leave.
