AUSTIN, Texas—Jury selection has started in the capital murder trial of a 26-year-old former software engineer charged with fatally shooting an Austin police officer in 2012.

Hundreds of potential jurors have been filling out questionnaires Monday. The pool will be narrowed and then potential jurors will be questioned individually before a panel is picked to hear the case of Brandon Daniel. The process is likely to take weeks.

Daniel could get the death penalty if convicted of the slaying of officer Jaime Padron.

Daniel last week pleaded innocent.

Authorities have said Padron was killed in a struggle with Daniel at a Walmart store after responding to a shoplifting call there. The Austin American-Statesman reports ( Daniel's lawyers tried unsuccessfully to reach a plea agreement to remove the death penalty.
