EL PASO, Texas—A West Texas businessman has been sentenced to 18 months in prison in a bribery case involving municipal contracts to repair garbage trucks.

A federal judge in El Paso on Thursday sentenced 52-year-old Albert G. Torres, who owns G.O.T. Supply Inc. in El Paso. Torres in May pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and deprivation of honest services. Torres must also repay nearly $224,000 to the city.

Investigators say Torres from 2006 through late 2008 paid bribes and kickbacks to secure work repairing and servicing El Paso city garbage trucks. Prosecutors say the money went to ex-fleet maintenance chief Lorenzo Avalos and others.

Avalos last summer was sentenced to three years in federal prison for his role in the scheme.
