Austin emergency management spokesman Jacob Dirr says officials meeting about 3 a.m. Tuesday were told icy conditions would not be bad. That changed after daybreak when it became obvious conditions had deteriorated.
But by then, some kids already were on school buses while some teachers and principals were reporting they couldn't get out of their homes because of ice.
School chiefs in Round Rock, Leander and Lake Travis say they're sorry for the bad calls. Leander Superintendent Bret Champion tells the Austin American-Statesman ( http://bit.ly/1gn4603) he put parents in a bad spot and never would have put children on buses if he had known more.
