The punishment phase begins Friday in El Paso for 24-year-old Christian Martinez. Jurors on Thursday rejected a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity and instead found Martinez guilty of capital murder.
Investigators say 58-year-old Amalia Flores and 20-year-old Jovana Flores were found slain at their residence. Each woman was stabbed dozens of times in the January 2011 attack.
Defense attorney Joe Spencer told jurors that medical experts say Martinez has schizophrenia and depression and broke into the home looking for a weapon to kill himself.
Prosecutor Bill Anderson rejected claims of Martinez having mental issues and said the attacker wanted to rob the victims.
