AUSTIN, Texas—A Central Texas school district has banned a student game dubbed "assassins" amid safety and security concerns.

The Austin Independent School District on Monday announced the student-organized game, in which seniors use markers to tag fellow students, is banned from all campuses.

Students eliminate opponents during school hours by sneaking up on them and using a marker to touch the person's skin and indicate he or she has been assassinated.

Associate Superintendent Edmund Oropez says district officials learned that some seniors at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy planned to play.

Oropez says such games are inappropriate on campus and distract from teaching and learning. School officials also cited unnecessary security risks with such games, which at some schools have involved toy guns and plastic light sabers.
