Over the past week, rumors have been circulating on social media about obtaining free baby formula, by calling the phone number on the back of the can of formula.

The claim does not specify if the formula is supposed to be free or not. The Graham Leader contacted five formula companies to inquire about the rumor, and this is what was discovered.

Enfamil

A customer service representative with Enfamil directed us to a message on their website, www.enfamil.com, that addresses concerns related to COVID-19. In regards to the internet rumor, their website states, “We are committed to helping every baby get the formula he or she needs. That’s why we are doing everything we can to ensure product availability in our Enfamil Shop and at your neighborhood store, which you can locate by using the Enfamil Store Locator. Contrary to rumors in some online social networks, we are not distributing free cases of formula. We are instead focused on ensuring equitable availability for every baby.”

The customer service representative also advised that struggling families could enjoy their Enfamil Family Beginnings program that offers samples and “up to $400 in free gifts.”

Similac

When calling Similac, we were greeted with an automated message stating that Similac is not offering free product. Like Enfamil, Similac provides a program called “StrongMoms Rewards” and offers up to $400 in savings.

The Similac website also offers a COVID-19 update. The update states, “at this time, there is no impact on availability of Similac nutrition products or distribution in the U.S. We have a large global manufacturing and distribution network and have plans in place to manage contingencies as needed.”

The update offers six major retailer websites where its brand of baby formula can be offered online.

Gerber

A phone call to Gerber is greeted with an automated message.

“We are aware of a rumor circulating on social media that states there are free cases of formula if you call and request them,” the message said. “We do not have any sampling programs at this time.”

A customer service representative with Gerber confirmed that Gerber is not sending out free product. The representative also directs callers to their website where “coupons and special offers can be found.”

Parent’s Choice

A customer service representative with Parent’s Choice said there is no program offering free product at this time. The representative directed us to an FAQ section on their website for popular questions the company has received.

“Parent’s Choice is only available at Walmart,” the website states. “Parent’s Choice offers a range of scientifically advanced formulas that meet all strict standards, just like the national brands, but at a price that is significantly less.”

In summary, there are certain circumstances where orders may be placed over the phone, but it is strictly on a case-by-case basis. None of the companies contacted could offer cases or cans of formula as the social media posts suggest.

We also contacted Earth’s Best regarding their organic line of baby formula. No information was provided at that time and are awaiting a further response.
