Volunteers needed for 57th AHC Run at PK
In a few weeks the second annual Run for 57th AHC 5K Run/2K Walk will take place beginning at 8 a.m. at the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, located N. FM 2353 at Possum Kingdom Lake. Race Director Jim McKenzie is seeking volunteers to help prepare for the race beforehand and also needs help with several activities on race day. Anyone willing to help with the race can call McKenzie at 817-821-4070.
On Thursday, May 19 , volunteers will be needed at 5 p.m. at the PKCC building to help stuff goodie bags, ice down drinks, set up tables and do a few other things, which should not take more than an hour to complete. Refreshments and snacks will be served.
On race day, Saturday, May 21, volunteers are needed at 6:45 a.m. to direct participant parking at PKCC. All participant and visitor parking will be in and around the pavilion area in back yard. Show up at 7 a.m. to help register new participants, check in pre-registered participants and hand out bibs, T-Shirts and goodie bags. At 7:30 a.m, help is needed to set up and work the water stop at the corner of Willow Road and McGinnis Point Rd.
Volunteers can show up at PKCC at 7:30 am. Saturday, May 21, to direct runners on course turns, exiting the parking lot on to FM 2353, turning on Willow Beach Drive, turning on Willow Road, turning on Airport Road, turning on Pickwick Road, turning on FM 2353 and turning back into parking lot. Reflective vests will be issued.
At 7:45 am, Saturday, May 21, persons are needed to drive the lead vehicle and also the trail vehicle: a razor, mule or whatever that person has available.
“Please let me know as soon as possible if you are available, which activities you desire and your shirt size,” McKenzie said. “Every volunteer will receive a T-shirt.”
Breakfast burritos and beverages will be available in the morning for those assisting with the race.
The event is being sponsored by the 57th AHC, known by the call sign “Gladiator” or “Cougar” (gunships), which was based in Kontum, Pleiku and An Khe in the Central Vietnam Highlands during the Vietnam War. Aircrews flew the UH-1 Huey helicopter in support of the 5th Special Forces and other US and Vietnamese combat units. The group will donate all net proceeds to Courage Beyond, an organization which supports veterans and their families affected by PTSD.
