Annual Pigskin Weekend cornhole tournament takes off next weekend
The third annual Pigskin Weekend cornhole tournament, which brings teams of competitors from around the state, will change from its traditional location on the downtown square to the Young County Arena this year. This year marks the first year the event will change from being run by the Graham Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The event this year will be held at the Young County Arena outback arena behind the indoor arena located at 120 Barclay Blvd in Graham Saturday, Oct. 30. This year, the event changed hands from the CVB to Curtis Strider, who ran the cornhole event for Pigskin Weekend last year.
“I am a regional director for the Texas Cornhole League (TCL), and so last year TCL asked me to help run that tournament so I did and got with (then CVB Manager) Grant (Ingram) and everything so he realized ‘Hey, he can run all these tournaments.’ So this year when we started planning the tournament we sat down, (...) me Grant and (CVB Manager) Casyn Smith and started planning everything out,” he said. “Well, they were still going to do pretty much most of it and all that and I was just there to run the tournament and then a couple months ago they let me know that they weren’t going to be able to really do anything for the tournament because (...) with the CVB they have to be able to prove that they are bringing in people to stay in the hotels. Well, all the hotels are booked for like a month, I mean that whole span we were going to put it (on) it was all booked so they couldn’t justify spending the money for it.”
The event this year will solely be the cornhole tournament with team registration available the day of the event from 11 a.m. to noon, or by contacting Strider by phone at 940-521-6730, or by email at curtisstrider@gmail.com.
