An 11-year-old boy shot this weekend while cleaning guns with his father is expected to make a full recovery.

Graham Police Department Chief Brent Bullock said the shooting appeared accidental, but the department is continuing to investigate.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, GPD was notified of the shooting. GPD officers and investigators arrived on scene shortly after.

The minor was cleaning guns at a residence in the 300 block of Victory St. with his father, Samuel Janssen. While the minor was handling a single-action revolver, the gun discharged and hit him in the chest.

“The investigation at this point (makes) it looks like the dad was being a very responsible father,” Bullock said.

The minor was airlifted and, as of Monday, Aug. 7, was at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth recovering after surgery.

The police chief said the department had an investigator visit Cook Children’s Medical Center on Sunday, Aug. 6 to collect evidence for the investigation.

The department is waiting until the family returns from the hospital before continuing their investigation.

“We’re letting the family do their thing with the kid in Fort Worth. It’s going to take a little bit, first and foremost, to make sure the kid is okay,” Bullock said. “As they get back here, we will do some things that we need to do on that (investigation). It will be under investigation for a while. … It does look accidental, but we’ve got to make sure.”
