Area leaders push for signs to assist first responders

The Graham Chamber of Commerce, area first responders and Young County are partnering for a campaign to help push all residents who reside in the county to obtain an address sign for emergency response situations. The county has a service available for residents to purchase a 911 address sign for a low-cost or no-cost, depending on the situation.

The county can make a 12-inch aluminum sign with reflective numbers for $5, or at a higher cost depending if they want their street name on the sign with their street number. Sizes range up to 36 inches for an address sign. The push by the first responders and the chamber is to have at least the numbers posted on a roadway, gate, fence, mailbox, or other easily distinguishable area to display the address for first responders. The Young County 911 Coordinator’s Office can be contacted at 940-549-7911 to have a sign created.

“When people don’t have a numerical sign for their 911 address, it could mean that they are not able to be located as quickly during an emergency and that obviously is not a good situation because in an emergency every second could be the difference between life and death,” Graham Chamber of Commerce CEO Krisa De La Cruz said. “So we are trying to inform the residents of Young County so that they know that this option is available through the county.”
