After partnering with local law firm Turner & Allen last year, John Brown recently hit another milestone when he was recognized by his university as one of the top 10 alumni of the last decade.

Brown was recognized Friday, April 4 by St. Mary’s University School of Law as one of 10 outstanding alumni who have graduated within the past 10 years and was a recipient of the 10 Under 10 Award.

Before being a partner of Turner, Allen & Brown, PLLC, Brown was raised in Graham where he graduated from Graham High School. It was during high school that he worked as an intern for former County Judge Stan Peavy.

“Graham High School had a workplace program, and I was his office intern. And so from the very beginning, I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer, but a lawyer in Graham, Texas, because it’s a much better thing than working in the big city for a big firm,” Brown said.

He said what sets working in Graham apart from the big cities is working with people.

“You work for big businesses, small businesses, medium businesses, individuals (and) families,” Brown said. “When you’re in a big law firm in a city, there’s not a personal aspect to it. I think that takes away a lot of the heart and soul of it.”

After graduating high school, Brown earned a bachelors degree in history from the University of Texas at Austin and later attended St. Mary’s University School of Law where he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence.

While attending law school, he was inducted into the Order of the Barristers, was a member of the National Trial Team, earned a certificate in advocacy and served as a law clerk to Judge Patricia Alvarez of Texas Fourth Court of Appeals.

Brown studied in the office of Turner & Allen for the bar exam which he took in July 2019.

He later came to work for the firm in August 2019 and was licensed in October 2019.

“I’ve been really lucky to start working, cutting my teeth under the tutelage of Jess Turner and Rusty Allen. Jess and Rusty are exceptional lawyers in their own right. ...They came up working for great lawyers because you can’t do it on your own,” Brown said. “You have to have good teachers, good mentors, and they’ve been really good about that.”

Brown has been a partner since March 2024 and represents farmers, ranchers, independent oil and gas operators, families, individuals and businesses across the North Texas area.

“It’s hard work. It’s worth working hard at. It is intellectually stimulating, but more importantly, you provide a valuable service to people, and that is the most rewarding thing at the end of the day,” he said.
