Board suggests district research into restorative discipline

The Graham ISD Board of Trustees last week followed up a discussion from May regarding public comments related to district incidents of bullying, harassment and discrimination made to students. The board made the decision in May to get monthly reports in executive session and stated that data could also be presented in a public setting during their board meetings.

During the April board meeting, a student of the district and their parents spoke about racial discrimination incidents which had occurred during their time at Graham High School. The speakers felt little or no action was taken as punishment for the incidents.

GISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse said last Wednesday during the meeting that he met with the campus principals and assistant principals who looked at what they could create to help the board and district track the data on these incidents.

“They have come up with a form that they could input the data in and this shows you a sample. I only shared this with the board because they put in a real-life sample using some word that (...) you would see. I am wanting feedback from you, this is the kind of data that we can share with the board on a monthly basis, a bi-monthly basis, you have to tell me how you might want it,” Cruse said. “So it would give (the) student name, date of incident, location of incident, who reported the victim and the description of the event and that description they would be able to put in what the outcome was and that sort of thing.”
