(ARCHIVE PHOTO | THE GRAHAM LEADER) The filling period for local election ended Friday, Feb. 14, with Graham having multiple contested election upcoming in May. Early voting in the election will be held April 22-29 at two voting locations.
The city of Graham, Graham ISD and Newcastle ISD will have contested elections upcoming in May after candidates filed for open seats on the city council and district board of trustees.
City council and school board seats in Graham, Olney and Newcastle are up for election. Additionally, there are open seats for the Olney Hamilton Hospital Board of Directors.
Applications could be submitted to local political subdivisions through Friday, Feb. 14. The election will take place Saturday, May 3.
Early voting in the election will run from Tuesday, April 22 through Tuesday, April 29. The last day to register to vote in the election will be Thursday, April 3.
City of Graham
The Graham City Council has two seats up for election in May which are held by Jack Little and Brant Lundgren.
Lundgren did not file for reelection for his Place 4 seat, with Brendan Weatherman being the sole filer for the position. There will be an election for the Place 3 position with Little filing for reelection and new candidate Chris Hatfield filing for the position.
Graham ISD
The Graham ISD Board of Trustees has three positions up for election in May which are held by Lauren Mahaney, Chris Blanton and Jason Smith.
Blanton and Smith were the sole filers for their Place 4 and Place 5 positions, respectively. There will be an election for the Place 3 position with Mahaney filing for reelection and new candidate Ellen Morris filing for the position.
City of Olney
The Olney City Council has three seats up for election in May which are held by Thea Sullivan, Chuck Stennett and Steven Nurre, who is filling the unexpired term for a previous council member. Only the incumbents filed for reelection, so the election will be canceled at a later date.
Olney ISD
The Olney ISD Board of Trustees has three board members who are up for election in May which are Jeff Harvey, Summer Branum and Hannah Stewart.
Incumbents Stewart and Branum were the sole filers for their Place 3 and Place 5 positions, respectively. Harvey did not file for reelection for his Place 4 seat, with Reid Miller being the sole filer for the seat.
Olney Hospital District
The Olney Hamilton Hospital Board of Directors has four positions up for election in May which are held by Dale Lovett, Dave Lund, Lonnie Rue and Dr. Jeremy Johnson.
Incumbents Lovett, Lund, Rue and Johnson were the sole filers for their positions. The uncontested election will be canceled at a later date.
City of Newcastle
The Newcastle City Council seats held by Dustin Hobbs and Sarah Riley are up for election.
After mayor Josh Bennett resigned in August, Mayor Pro Tem Dickey Baynes has been filling that role within the city. The Newcastle City Council appointed Baynes as mayor Monday, Feb. 10.
Baynes’ vacated seat will be filled by Joshua Duffield, who was the sole filer for the position. Incumbents Riley and Hobbs both filed for reelection. The uncontested election will be canceled at a later date.
Newcastle ISD
Newcastle ISD has two board members who are up for election in May which are Sam Creel and Dancey Creel.
Sam Creel filed to run again for his Place 4 seat, and will be joined by new candidates Robert Dotson, Kellen Capps and Pecos Bohannan.
Dancey Creel also filed to run again for her Place 5 seat, and will be joined by new candidates Tara Bickham and Nicholas Whitaker.
The Place 7 position on the board is also vacant and three candidates have filed to run for that seat. Those candidates are Carla Short, Chevy Humphrey and Anneta Buenger.
