Champions: Annual Food Truck event draws crowd to square

The downtown square was filled Saturday with eager patrons looking for their fill from over 35 food trucks available at the seventh annual Food Truck Championship of Texas. Trucks of all varieties faced off for the grand prize of $10,000 which was claimed by the food truck Sushi Dojo.

The day of events began in the morning with the Possum Pedal bike ride taking off from Oak and Third Streets in Graham. The bike ride had routes of 6, 27, 42, 54.5, 61, and 76 miles traveling Southwestern Young County with trips through Graham, Olney, Jermyn, Bryson and historic Fort Belknap. The event of the day was the Food Truck Championship of Texas which served food trucks from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Graham downtown square.

The winners each year are determined by a panel of judges which this year were Dante Ramirez, Mark Gordy and Shane Davis. Ramirez has been in the catering and restaurant business for more than 25 years, with experience in the markets of Dallas and Fort Worth. Gordy serves as the executive chef for the Dallas-based hospitality group Flavorhook which specializes in restaurant management, consulting and brand licensing. Davis currently serves as an Aledo City Councilman, runs the Aledo Athletic Club and in the past served as an executive chef for various companies.

Sushi Dojo, a sushi food truck based from a Southlake restaurant, won the grand prize of $10,000 during the event. Other winners were Toadally Ice for Best Signature Dish, Happy Dogs Corn Dogs for Most Unique Menu, Addie Cakes & Lily Pies for Best Dessert, Trevino’s Craft Smokehouse for Best BBQ, Bite My Biscuit for Best American Cuisine, Bada Bing Wood Fired Pizza for Best International Dish, TX Salty Heifer for Best Truck Theme & Design, Sophia’s Haitian Cuisine for Best Food Truck Spirit and Daddy Bob’s Smokewagon for People’s Choice.
