Jurors and prospective jurors in Young County will now receive an increased reimbursement of expenses when reporting for service in a court.

The Texas Government Code was recently amended to implant this financial compensation increase throughout the state of Texas.

According to the updated state code, jurors and prospective jurors are entitled to receive reimbursement for travel and other expenses of no less than $20 on the first day and no less than $58 for the second day and any other day beyond the initial day.

The previous amount being paid out to jurors who served was $6 on the first day and $40 on the second and further days. With the raise in reimbursement from the county, written in the code is that the state will reimburse the counties $14 a day for the first day and $52 a day for any day after that.

The county will continue to pay jurors and prospective jurors out of pocket from the jury fund of the county but will receive reimbursement from the state afterwards.

A commissioners court has the ability to determine the amount of reimbursement for the types of cases jurors serve on or the courts they serve in, but the amounts can not be below $20 for the first day or $58 for any subsequent days.

The Young County Commissioners Court voted and approved these state amendments with a unanimous decision.

Days of service are counted for jurors even if they only participate in a fraction of the day’s work. This includes individuals who go through the jury selection process but are not selected to serve on a jury in district or county court.
