(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) Patriotic music is sung under the Young County Courthouse gazebo during the Celebrate Freedom event Saturday, June 29. The Young County Commissioners Court voted Monday, Nov. 17 to reject all bids for the construction of a new courthouse gazebo.

The Young County Commissioners Court chose not to proceed with bids to construct a new courthouse gazebo.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Jimmy Wiley was the sole commissioner to give comment Monday, Nov. 17 on the reasoning for the decision.

“We have decided since the bids have come out to be so high that we will just go ahead and reject them all and put that on a different item in the future,” Wiley said.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Stacy Creswell made the motion to reject all of the bids for the gazebo and the motion was passed unanimously 5-0.

Young County Judge Win Graham added that currently the court does not see any motion for re-bidding in the near future.

The court received bids for the gazebo at their meeting Monday, Aug. 25, where they were initially hesitant to move forward as all of the proposed bids were over the county’s budget for a new gazebo.

The court placed $155,000 into the budget for the construction of a new gazebo. However, all bids received for the project exceeded that amount.

Their bid from Sullivan Contracting Services came in at $282,207 along with a bid from JC Contractors which came in at $248,125.

The closest bid that aligned with the budget placed by the commissioners court came from NEXBld GC at $165,000.

Level 5 Architecture representative Justin Gilmore had been in communication with NEXBld GC in the weeks proceeding and was able to get them to make a revised bid of $152,000.

Even with this bid however, the court was still hesitant on how to proceed.

The existing courthouse gazebo was closed by the county in the spring for safety reasons after windstorms damaged its structural integrity. The structure was later sold and removed from the property.
