The Graham Conventions and Visitors Bureau is partnering with the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center for the inaugural Pigskin Weekend event Saturday with up to $6,000 in prizes.

The event opens at 10 a.m. and will have tailgating, live music, college football, a pig roast and a cornhole tournament hosted by the Texas Cornhole League at the empty lot behind the OPOMAC. CVB Manager Grant Ingram said the event was created from an idea by members of the OPOMAC and to fill a spot for an event this season.

“It has been a joint effort between the CVB and the Old Post Office Museum,” Ingram said. “They had intentions of doing a pig roast (and) we were looking for a Fall event to bring the community together and attract some outside tourism and decided to partner up on this.”

Admission to the event is $25 and includes $5 worth of food and drink vouchers, children’s activities and music. All proceeds from the event will benefit the OPOMAC.

Texas Cornhole League will be running the cornhole tournament which is broken up into three divisions: Open, Competitive and Social. The Open division is $60 per team, the Competitive division is $60 per team and the Social division is $50 per team.

“We have $6,000 in total cash prizes and so the social is more of your backyard weekend players and then we are going to move into more competitive with the other two divisions, the guys that are traveling every week and weekend to play,” Ingram said. “So we are expecting to have some seriously dedicated cornhole players here.”

As of Friday, Ingram said 30 teams had registered for the event. Registration can be completed by visiting the CVB website, but Ingram said the organization is hoping to get all teams registered by Thursday.

“We are hoping to get all of the registrations by Thursday the 14th (and) depending on the numbers we might extend that, but we are really hoping that we can get everything locked in that way we can create the brackets and get everything finalized,” he said.

Texas Cornhole League will be supplying the boards and bean bags for the tournament, so no equipment is required for registered teams. Ingram said another reason for the Thursday deadline on team registration is to get the tournament brackets created.

“It will be a double elimination tournament, so you lose one then you move down into the losers bracket and you can potentially win your way back into the championship,” Ingram said. “It is two people to a team and you are throwing little four, five inch square bean bags into a hole that is cut out of a board.”

Boards will be set up at the event for recreational use aside from the competitive competition. A spectator area with bleachers will also be available at the event along with a trailer with college football playing on several television screens in the parking lot behind the OPOMAC.

“I am a big fan of college football and live music and tailgating and all of that good stuff, so we were able to kind of piece everything together to make it one big event and we are really excited about the opportunity to raise money for the Old Post Office and Museum in a fun way for the community to get involved,” Ingram said.
