Early voting in the March primaries ended Friday across the state, with a low voter turnout reported in the first week across Young County and continuing through Tuesday. Early voting was canceled Wednesday and Thursday in the county due to inclement weather conditions.

On the March ballot are contested party runnings for both state and local seats in the county as well as proclamations. The Texas Secretary of State reported as of Friday after early voting concluded, the county had 1,162 early voters turn out to vote, or 10.01% of the 11,614 voters registered in the county.

Early voting was held at two locations in the county, North Central Texas College at 928 Cherry St. in Graham, and Olney Community Library at 807 W. Hamilton St. in Olney. Election day voting will be held Tuesday, March 1, at five locations around the county. Those locations are First United Methodist Church at 700 Third St. in Graham, Loving Volunteer Fire Department at 8891 Hwy. 114 in Loving, Newcastle City Hall at 608 Broadway St. in Newcastle, as well as NCTC and Olney Community Library.

According to Texas Secretary of State John Scott, Texas is an open primary state where voters do not register as members of a particular political party. Eligible state voters can submit a ballot in either party’s primary election, but cannot cast a ballot for both. The primary elections are run by the Republican and Democratic parties in each county. The party chairs in each county are responsible for conducting voting on election day, while county election officials administer during early voting.
