Next Saturday, the eighth annual Family Fun in the Sun event will be held on the downtown square spreading a message of water safety in all aspects of life. One of the main draws of the event for families is the opportunity to receive a free life jacket for children or a new fitted life jacket.

Annually, the event is held by the Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety Awareness organization in Graham. On July 7, 2013, the Terasas family lost Wyatt Dale Terasas to drowning at a public lake swim area. Since then, the family has worked to put life jackets on all children and spread water safety locally and around the state.

“Eight years ago we lost Wyatt to drowning and so we want to keep reminding people about the importance of water safety and how quickly things can change. We lost him to drowning because he did not have a life jacket on. We want to make sure that every child has a life jacket and that we are able to talk to parents and see them and visit with them one-on-one so we can tell them Wyatt’s story and they will see that it can happen to them,” said Tracey Terasas, Co-Founder of Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety Awareness and grandmother of Wyatt. “We never thought we would eight years ago be doing what we are doing. It is not something we wanted to be doing, but it happened and we are trying to keep that from happening to other families.”
