Young County farmers and ranchers will be eligible to apply for low-interest loans after the United States Department of Agriculture said a natural disaster in 15 Texas counties on Oct. 4.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue declared drought conditions began on Sept. 10 for the counties. The 15 counties are Baylor, Bell, Callahan, Foard, Hardeman, Haskell, Jones, Knox, Milam, Nolan, Runnels, Shackleford, Taylor, Throckmorton and Williamson.

The Secretary also designated 28 counties as a contiguous, or neighboring county, including Young County, which allows farmers and ranchers to apply for low-interest disaster loans based on damages caused by the drought.

“The Secretary has notified the administrator of the Farm Service Agency to immediately make emergency loans available to eligible applicants in your county,” Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief W. Nim Kidd wrote in a letter to Young County Judge John Bullock. “Your local FSA office will have the details on this program.”

For more information about FSA loans, contact Texas Department of Emergency Management’s Debra River-Harris at 512-424-7835.
