Filing ends for primary elections

Local seats to be contested in March election

Candidate filing for a place on the March 1, 2022 primary election ballot ended Monday, with several local races contested. There were 11 Republican candidates who filed with their party chair for a place on the ballot and no Democratic candidates who filed.

Local positions up for election in the March primary election are Young County District Clerk, held by Jamie Land; Young County Clerk, held by Kay Hardin; Young County Judge, held by John Bullock; Young County Treasurer, held by Ann Daily; Young County Commissioner Precinct 2, held by Matt Pruitt; Young County Commissioner Precinct 4, held by Jimmy Wiley; Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, held by Jason Hearne; and Justice of the Peace Precinct 3, held by Stan Mahler. The terms for those currently elected officials end Dec. 31, 2022, according to a candidate list on the Young County elections website.

Local candidates

Eleven Young County candidates filed for a place on the Republican primary election ballot. Candidates who have filed on the Republican primary election ballot are Win Graham seeking Young County Judge; Land seeking reelection to Young County District Clerk; Hardin seeking reelection to Young County Clerk; Kathy Mishler seeking the position of Young County Treasurer; Joey Stewart and Lonnie Wales seeking the position of Justice of the Peace Precinct 3; Wiley seeking reelection to Young County Commissioner Precinct 4 and opponent Rob Ward seeking the same seat; Hearne seeking reelection to Justice of the Peace Precinct 1; Pruitt seeking reelection to Young County Commissioner Precinct 2 and opponent Scott Shook seeking the same seat.

As of the deadline Monday, there were no democratic filings for the eight positions up for election in March with the Texas Secretary of State. The filling period for county, district and statewide office ended at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13. The Young County Republican and Democratic chairs are Kyle Milam and Jessica King, respectively.
