Graham Police Department officers and a Young County Sheriff’s Office deputy apprehended a Graham man last Thursday with active warrants in Young and Stephens County.

William Chad Proffitt, 44, of Graham, was arrested on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest with a vehicle, assault with bodily injury and two charges of evading arrest or detention with previous convictions, according to a release from GPD Chief Brent Bullock. According to the Young County Jail, Proffitt additionally had a charge listed for burglary of habitation out of Stephens County.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, GPD officer Joshua Hufstedler was assisting a traffic stop on Hwy. 16 South when he observed a silver 2005 Mercedes Benz SUV, which had been reported stolen earlier in the week, pass his location southbound on Hwy. 16 South. Hufstedler cleared from the stop and began to catch up to the vehicle. The officer was able to catch up to the vehicle in the 2400 block of Hwy. 16 South and ran the license plate through Young County Dispatch to confirm it was stolen.

“Dispatch quickly confirmed the Mercedes was stolen. Officer Hufstedler followed the vehicle as the operator turned from (Hwy. 16) onto Old Bunger Rd. At that point, Officer Hufstedler activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle,” Bullock wrote.
