On March 22 and 23 historians will come together at Fort Belknap to discuss the legend, myths and facts of Young County Frontiersman Britt Johnson.

“Britt Johnson is probably the most significant early frontier character in Texas,” Young County Pct.1 Commissioner Mike Sipes said. “ (…) Britt Johnson was a black man, an ex-slave, the partner and employee of a white family and he was of such significance on the prairie and historical matters that movies have been made about him.”

Sipes added John Wayne’s movie The Searchers was loosely based on a significant incident in Johnson’s life which involved chasing down his family who was kidnapped by Native Americans and taking them back. The commissioner said Johnson’s story and life centered in Young County.

For the rest of the story see the Saturday, March 16 edition of The Graham Leader.
