The Graham Fire Department has been wearing breast cancer awareness T-shirts since 2010, this year the GFD auxiliary is seeking help from the public in designing the shirt.

Auxiliary vice president Cole Epperson said the designs must include back print, only two colors plus shirt color, be family friendly and in some way endorse the fire department and bring awareness to breast cancer.

“A lot of fire departments wear breast cancer shirts to show support,” he said. “This year we are hoping to get more community involvement and maybe if the community designs the shirt we might sell more, but also just gives people an opportunity to be involved.”

Epperson said the auxiliary will cover the cost of the T-shirts for the department and all of the profits will be donated to charities in Young County which involve breast cancer. He added last year, the money raised was split between the Graham Regional Medical Center mammography machine and an organization which helps pay for travel and hotels of those receiving radiation treatment.

The last day to enter a design submission via email to grahamfireauxiliary@gmail.com is Saturday, Aug. 25. Epperson said the department will announce a winner by Sept. 1 with the department to begin wearing and selling the T-shirts on Oct. 1. The winner will also take home a free T-shirt.

The price of the shirts will be determined by a vote at a later date and they will be sold at the station, located 815 First St.
