GISD board talks pre-K program changes
The pre-K program for Graham Independent School District is hosted at Pioneer Elementary School, but with a limited amount of space for students the school board discussed on Wednesday what could be done if the campus exceeded capacity.
The GISD school board approved the expansion of the pre-K program from a half-day to a full-day program in March 2016 for the 2016-17 school year. The state funds half of the day while GISD funds the other half, which is a $300,000 annual expense for the district. The problem the district could possibly run into is when more students apply than the school can take currently, Cruse said.
“We charge $300 a month for nine months (of pre-K for non-qualifying students),” Cruse said. “To fully fund a (new) staff member we would need to charge more than that. I know one of the local daycares we kind of looked at, is a $100 a week, so depending on the length of the month you can figure that part out.”
