GISD bus driver gifts guitar to student
For the second straight year, Graham ISD bus driver George Plumlee gifted a guitar to a student on bus #28.
Plumlee, who is approaching his third year as a school bus driver, said his bus picks up 28 students from all grades in the Jean area.
“When I retired, my nephew gave me a guitar and he said ‘pass it on’ and I love playing the guitar and I wished I started when I was a younger kid like these kids that I’m trying to (gift),” he said.
Plumlee said each year he asks his students to write an essay and his friend, Susan Smith, who is a retired teacher, reads them and helps decide the winner.
“It’s supposed to tell Susan Smith why they would like to win the guitar, how long they wanted play, just anything to show they are really interested in a guitar,” the bus driver said. “You know, if you asked kids on a bus, how many of you want a guitar everybody does. But, not everybody will take the effort to learn and really work at it. So, I figured giving them a letter they had to write then that shows that they are interested in it.”
Jayden Ballard was declared the winner of the contest and was gifted the guitar, which Plumlee purchased, and four music lessons donated by KP Music Studio.
