GISD clarifies remote learning differences from spring to fall 2020

Graham ISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse released a video on the district communication source ParentSquare Friday detailing some of the changes from remote learning last spring and now into the fall 2020 school year.

Cruse said Fall 2020 will be vastly different from the spring with the shutdown of schools being sudden, unexpected and all students being forced to learning remotely in the spring.

“This fall, we’ve had the time to monitor the spread of COVID-19 and through the counsel of local health officials, our local reopening task force as well as the TEA, have created a plan for reopening,” Cruse said. “Also, parents have been given the decision whether to send their children to school for face-to-face learning or remote learning. As a result, a majority of students will attend on campus, while some will participate from home.”

Cruse said the expectations for participation will increase this fall. In last year’s spring semester, students were allowed to turn in assignments as they were completed without a hard date for the assignment to be due, and he said the rules will be different for Fall 2020.

“This fall, students must complete assignments and submit them through the Google Classroom on the dates they are assigned to be received to receive attendance and grade credit,” Cruse said. “Also in the spring, districts around the state as well as Graham ISD developed temporary grading guidelines to account for the shutdown. In the fall, according to mandates from state leaders, districts must revert to the grading guidelines that were in effect prior to the shutdown. These grading guidelines are available on the Graham ISD website.”
