Ten teams from Graham Junior High School raised over $7,000 on Thursday, Dec. 5, for area nonprofits through the Graham Chamber of Commerce’s third annual Hot Chocolicious competition in partnership with GJHS.

The program welcomes GJHS students from sixth through eighth grade which are grouped by each grade level. The event serves as entrepreneurship training for the students involved with the basics of how to start and manage a business. A giveaway event was held Monday, where it was announced how much was raised by each team and was led by Graham ISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse who said the night had ideal conditions.

“This year we had 10 teams participate, which is our largest number of teams to participate,” Cruse said. “The annual parade is always a great event, and we added this Hot Chocolicious competition to go along with that and this year we were blessed by optimal weather, I guess, because it wasn’t very cold and there were lots of people down on the square. I think that is one of the contributing factors that these kiddos this year were able to raise over $7,000 for local charities.”

The program was created in 2017 as a way to foster entrepreneurialism in students at GJHS and provide an additional program with the annual Christmas parade, Graham Chamber of Commerce CEO Krisa De La Cruz said in a previous interview with The Graham Leader. The program has grown in two years with 168 students applying to the chamber this year to be involved.
