A Rainbow Trout stocking season, which included some winter weather and high water delays, concluded on March 8 for the Possum Kingdom State Fish Hatchery. The hatchery now turns its attention to spawning and stocking striped bass.

“The last (trout) we ended up stocking was on March 8 in Amarillo and Wichita Falls,” Hatchery Manager Ryan Rogers said. “The last official stocking we had for Possum Kingdom Tailrace was on Feb. 15 and then we stocked some surplus fish on March 7.”

Rogers said they ended up stocking 786 surplus Trout into the Brazos River, near Morris Sheppard Dam. He said during the trout season, the hatchery was responsible for stocking fish in the western half of the state, from Ft. Worth west.

The trout season included some lengthy delays in January due to winter weather which dropped some snow and iced over roads. Some stockings were delayed as long as two weeks.

“We are actually going to start filling ponds for growing stripers next week,” Rogers said. “We will spawn striped bass here at PK. We will spawn those the second week of April and then we will stock those out in ponds and start harvesting those ponds in late May.”
