This Saturday, 50 years of history will be shared at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center as the contents of the 1972 time capsule from Shawnee Park will be on display. Fifty years ago the city of Graham wanted to provide a look into the past, placing a time capsule at Shawnee Park in 1972 to be opened in 2022.

The Graham Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a showcase of the time capsule items from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center, 510 Third St. in Graham. Everything within the time capsule was packaged in brown envelopes and was labeled with the contents. Chamber Manager Lisa Shook said a number of items will be on display at the event.

“We have several things from different businesses around town back at that time,” she said. “There’s several things from the school district, a yearbook, their student handbook, things like that are in there. Hexcel has several things in there. They did those blue centennial plates, like plate and ashtray and coaster, and all of those are in there. There were newspapers in there from that time. It’s basically paperwork.  (From) Mobley’s Office Supply store there was actually office supplies, like markers that still wrote and tape. So they did put some stuff like that in there. I think there’s a tape of a reel to reel video of someone’s stuff around town. So there are several things that it’ll be neat to look at.”
