Eighteen Newcastle High School students will be advancing to the UIL regional competition after their success at the district academic meet last week where they were named overall champions.

The meet was held Friday, March 27 in Woodson with Newcastle teams placing first or second in almost every competition.

“Our team this year looks very different from the previous years as we graduated five seniors last year,” Newcastle mathematics and UIL teacher Courtney Bozeman said. “This year we are anchored by two strong veteran competitors, sophomore Cason Ford and senior Alba Adame, who have state experience and are both state champions.”

Bozeman said the other team members were new to the UIL mathematics competition, but were focused on continuing the success of the program for Newcastle. She said the students are excelling at number sense, calculator applications and mathematics.

“However, we can see the results from across the state and we know we came up short of our standards in our performance on the district test,” Bozeman said. “We have the target on our backs and all the top schools in 1A are looking at our scores and working hard with the intent to knock us off and win the state championship.”

Newcastle students also competed in the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) competition in San Antonio held from March 19-21 and placed third overall in the 1A/2A Division.

Bozeman said she was pleased with the performance of the students at the TMSCA competition which allows her to enter all of her mathematics competition students and see how they stack up across the state against those in the 1A and 2A divisions.
