Officials cite schools for spike in Young County COVID-19 cases

Young County is currently experiencing a spike in positive COVID-19 cases in recent weeks. The number of active cases has slowly risen approaching July’s numbers.

On Sept. 23, Graham Regional Medical Center reported a total of 62 active COVID-19 cases in Young County. This is four cases less than the county-high of 66 cases reported in late July. The number had fluctuated in the teens through August into early September.

Dr. Pat Martin and Graham Regional Medical Center CEO Shane Kernell have both attributed the rise in cases to school districts in Young County.

Graham ISD as of Thursday had 30 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases within the district, including 23 students at Graham High School. Olney ISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Roach reported three active cases among teachers. There are currently no students with lab-confirmed cases within OISD. Newcastle ISD Superintendent Evan Cardwell said there are no active cases within NISD.
